Psychotherapy
How I work
I provide individual adult psychotherapy. My work is relational and mindful in nature. As we talk, we pay close attention to what arises within you (and between us) in the moment, which provides insight into the conscious and unconscious beliefs that drive your perceptions and behaviours.
Effective psychotherapy can enable you to become less attached to patterns that might undermine your resilience, creativity, and life force. This can allow you to live less fearfully, with more authentic expression and purpose, and to foster deeper and more trusting relationships.
I practise Core Process Psychotherapy, which is a client-centred and contemplative approach to psychotherapy developed at the Karuna Institute. It falls under the Humanistic and Integrative school of the UKCP. It combines elements of western psychodynamic theory with a Buddhist* approach to understanding the roots of our pain and discomfort, and how we might come to find relief. This includes paying close attention to the body, which holds knowledge beyond words and thought, its messages so often unheard in our busy, heady lives.
*The therapy is completely secular in nature, and you do not need to be a Buddhist or spiritual to benefit.
The focus of the therapeutic work is accessing your intrinsic wisdom, rather than striving to fix the self. There is no diagnosis or adherence to rigid process; instead, we meet together in acceptance of all that emerges, moment-to-moment. I have experienced through my own journey how much healing there is in simply being with the full range of human experience, without trying to neatly resolve it or force anything away. Insight, forgiveness, and compassion are examples of what could be available behind the pain and the personality defences that we might have developed to survive. I work in the spirit of non-judgement and gentle enquiry. All of you is welcome.
